OMG!!! Is this a Napier Sabre or big, round Bristol engine?Fantastic to have it based at Ardmore .What a plane to have in NZ.Good luck with all the remaining hard work, can’t wait to see the result.
What a fantastic feat it will be when it is finally in the air . Only shame it not the sabre engined model but on my door step -kermit weeks is having one rebuilt so maybe i will see one .Now i wil have to come back to nz to see it when its finished and go to wanaka again .
BEST OF LUCK WITH A VERY IMPORTENT RECREATION OF ONE HECK OF A PLANE
Best wishes with restoring this Mk.II to flying condition, I’d really like to see this one completed and possibly flying alongside its near relation, a Sea Fury! 🙂
It is just fantastic to see a Tempest in NZ, my father flew these with 486 squadron and he spoke highly of their performance, I cant wait to see it airborne again.
Thanks Les, it will be some day when the first Tempest flight in New Zealand happens. A tribute to all those, such as your Father who flew and maintained them in combat.
Thankyou so much for the work you are undertaking to get this wonderful machine into the air.
My Dad, FO Raymond J Cammock was killed while flying a Tempest in October 1944. I will be VERY interested in visiting you in Ardmore, not a great distance from Te Puke, BOP.
I am confident that my grandsons will also be very interested in getting up close to the craft that their war hero GGfather Ray flew.
Hi Frank, thanks for the kind words. You are more than welcome to visit and view the Tempest. We hope to make progress again with it one day.
Cheers
Paul
Hello Frank,
We are trying to locate the crashsite of his Tempest!
Your father was buried at Lochem, but first he was buried near his aircraft. Can you contact me?
In our local newspaper here in Oegstgeest in Holland, I read that on 11 November 2013 a memorial service will be conducted for Sergeant Ron Gravett.
70 years ago Gravett was shot down by the Germans while attacking a train, ready for departure, at the Leiden train station. Gravett attacked the train with a colleague, both flying a Hawker Typhoon.
The attack was succesful, but Gravett’s plane was hit by German anti-aircraft guns and crashed in Leiden.
Sergeant Gravett is buried at the cemitry of Oegstgeest,a village adjacent to Leiden.
We are grateful to Sergeant Gravett and all the others who made such big sacrificies during WWII, enabling us Dutchies to live in freedom.
Great to see that you are restoring and preserving the Typhoon’s successor, the Hawker Tempest !!
I’ve been building a model of a Mk.II for a PC flight sim and am having bother finding details of the cockpit placards and labels for the instrument panels etc. Could you possibly tell me where I might look for photos/drawings which would show these?
Thanks
Hi all!
I´m an rc modeller building WW1and WW2 scale/semiscale electric airplanes. My Albatros is equipped with a MB DIIIaü from Andrew at MRRcSond http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=0GPWF02306o
I´m now building a Hawker Tempest Mk1 but cannot supply Andrew with a Napier Sabre sound.
Andrew has made quality recordings of many ww1 and ww2 engines, startup idle up to max rpm and shut down.
Does anyone know where to get or record the Napier Sabre ?
Hi Lasse,
as far as I know there are currently no running Napier Sabre engines, but I did think there was one running one youtube. Probably as good as you are going to get for now anyway.
When your done come fly formation with our Sea Fury. We have a low level sea fury pilot who has been flying big British warbirds for about 15 years or so.
Hi Kyle, sounds like a great idea so seeing it is for sale the best way to do this would be to get someone in your “neck of the woods” to purchase it, we would finish it and then they could fly together.

Hi Jaap, thanks for passing that on to us. It is great to see that those who made the ultimate sacrifice have not been forgotten.

Hi – I have a couple of parts form an excavated Tempest that I cannot identify – is there an expert I can send the photos to?
Hi Kevin, got the photos but we are not expert enough obviously as we couldn’t identify the parts either.
