Perhaps in the case of these fine three gents we can take the name from a group of finches, a Charm of Spotters?
There are probably other lesser spotted spotters that other names there apply to, such as an intrusion (cockroaches), a rabble (butterflies), a horde (gnats), a scourge (mosquitoes), or a siege (bitterns).

Hi Dave, great list alright, one of the suggestions has been a 4 letter word starting with W. I can also confirm they were looking at an aircraft.
